1
Break up the top 6 inches of soil in your worn spot. Make sure you mix the dry and unhealthy top soil in with the more nutrient rich soil below the surface. Adding fresh compost into the broken-up soil will provide more nutrients for young grass.
-
2
Pack the dirt down so that it is level with the areas surrounding the dead patch.
-
-
3
Sprinkle grass generously over the newly turned soil. Coat the area evenly and allow for some overlap of seed into areas of live grass to ensure an even blending of the old and new grass.
-
4
Rake the grass seed into the broken up dirt and cover with fertilizer. Refer to the directions of your fertilizer for information on how much to use and how to apply it to your seeds.
-
5
Water the area thoroughly. The ground should be moist. The grass needs to be watered in this matter daily for the first two weeks, especially if your area does not receive much rainfall.
-
6
Cover the newly seeded area with straw. This straw will prevent the seeds from being eaten by birds or drying out.
