An enema is a medical procedure used to evacuate the bowels by injecting liquid into the lower intestinal tract. Enemas are typically administered using an enema bag, tubing and a nozzle. Since enema equipment is likely to come in contact with fecal material it is important to clean equipment thoroughly in order to sterilize it and prevent infection.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Antibacterial Soap
  • Bleach
  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Clothesline
  1. Step 1

Wash all enema equipment thoroughly using an antibacterial soap. Run the soap solution through the tubing.

  2. Step 2

Rinse the equipment thoroughly with warm water.

  3. Step 3

Fill a bucket with a mixture of water and bleach; the mixture should be 1 gallon of water to 0.8 pints (0.10 gallons) of bleach. This will make the mixture about 10% bleach and 90% water.

  4. Step 4

Put all of the enema equipment into the bucket and allow it to soak for 15 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Take the enema equipment out of the bucket and rinse it thoroughly once more with warm water.

  6. Step 6

Suspend a clothesline in a room with good air circulation and hang the enema bag and tubing up to dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Drying wet enema equipment is important to prevent bacteria and mold.
  • Do not use enema equipment for any purpose other than that for which it was designed and avoid sharing enema equipment when possible.
  • Use the bleach mixture in a well ventilated room and don't stay in the room as the equipment soaks since bleach fumes can be harmful if inhaled.
