How to Trim a Jade Plant

Jade plants are succulents, which makes them relatively easy to care for. They grow best in bright light and low humidity, and they are popular, clean indoor plants. Although most jade plants don't require trimming or pruning for their health, some species can grow up to 10 feet tall. To trim a large plant down to size or shape, follow some simple steps.       Trim your jade plant in spring or summer to cause the least stress to the plant.

      Decide which branches to trim from your jade plant. Never remove more than 20 to 30 percent of the plant. Two new branches will grow from a node to which the jade has been trimmed. Keep this in mind if you're trying to shape your plant.

      Cut the selected branches back to the nearest node or flush with the main stem of the plant.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep jade plants in very small pots to keep the plants small.

  • Most jade plants do not need consistent trimming.

  • Pruning a plant exposes it to bacteria and should be done only if absolutely necessary.
