1
Estimate the size of the water heater that the hot tub alone will need. Find out the water capacity of your new hot tub, and take two-thirds of that number to estimate the size of the heater needed just to run just the hot tub. For example, if your hot tub has a 90-gallon maximum water capacity, you will need at least a 60-gallon water heater for it alone.

2
Make a list of the other appliances and fixtures you have around your house that use hot water. These might include the washing machine, the dishwasher, bathtubs and showers.
-
-
3
Consider how many people are living in your house. Six people are obviously going to take many more hot showers than two people.
-
4
Ask around to see what others in the house have noticed concerning the availability of hot water. If you take the first shower every morning, see if the person who takes the third shower still feels like enough hot water is available. If it is not, you will definitely have trouble providing enough hot water for a hot tub on top of all of that.

Call a plumber and give him the current size of your hot water heater and the information you have collected. He might want to check things out himself, but it never hurts to know what's going on ahead of time.
