Quilted oven mitts are essential for handling hot pots and pans in the kitchen. They also are a great addition to outdoor grill areas, where the handles on long utensils may also be exposed to a lot of heat. Making your own oven mitts is a budget-saving way to keep every cook in your family safe.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Select an oven mitt pattern set with variable mitt sizes. Men tend to like longer mitts, and children need smaller sizes.

  2. Step 2

Pin and cut the quilted fabric to the pattern specifications.

  3. Step 3

Place right sides together and sew around the perimeter of the hand portion of the mitt.

  4. Step 4

Insert a hanging tab if you intend to hang your mitts up. This is generally a 3-inch double-folded and stitched piece of extra fabric. Fold this in half and sew it at the top back of the mitt inside the perimeter seam. It should form a 1-inch loop.

  5. Step 5

Starting at the back top of the mitt, open the one-fold fabric tape and insert the raw fabric edge in the tape. Sew the tape through on both sides at once to create a clean and durable top edge on the mitt. Trim off any excess where the tape meets at the back seam.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using fabric tape prevents fraying.
  • Embellish oven mitts with decorative stitching or contrasting fabrics, but remember to use heat-resistant fabrics. If no heat-resistant fabric is available, layer fabric, lining, cotton batting and poly batting and quilt them together in a simple criss-cross pattern.
