1
Measure the width of the window. Add 10 inches to this measurement to allow for the fullness of the valance and hemming. You may need to add a little more to the width depending on the total width of your window and desired fullness.
-
2
Install your desired curtain rod. Measure from the top of the curtain rod down to where you want your valance to stop, which is traditionally a quarter of the way down the window. Add 6 inches to this measurement to allow for the rod casing and hemming.

-
3
Wash, dry and iron curtain fabric to prevent shrinkage later on.
-
4
Lay your fabric on a large, flat surface. Cut fabric to your finished measurements.
-
5
Turn under the raw edges of the fabric on three sides of the valance. Pin the folded fabric in place. Sew a hem around the edges of the valance, removing the pins as you go.
-
6
Flip the valance so the right side of the fabric is on the table. Fold the unsewn edge of the fabric down 3 inches. Fold the raw edges under and pin in place.
-
7
Sew straight across the valance to secure the raw edges.
-
8
Start at the top of the fold and measure down 1 inch on the back of the folded part of the valance. Use chalk to make marks to use as a sewing guide.
-
9
Stitch across your valance on the chalk line to form the casing for the curtain rod. Backstitch at the beginning and the end of the sewing line to reinforce the ends of the valance.
-
10
Trim away any extra threads with your scissors to finish the valance.
