How to Treat Cat Burn Injuries

Save

Cats love to curl up in warm places and take a nap. They also may jump on burners in your kitchen or hop onto radiators or heaters. Cats may not feel that they are being burned unless temperatures are very hot. If your cat has been severely burned, you should take it to the vet as soon as possible. If your cat has a minor burn, there are a few things you can do to ease the pain and help it heal.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Cool water
  • Mild soap
  • Aloe Vera
  • Sterile gauze pads
  • Sterile water or saline solution
  • Rolled gauze
  • Dry telfa pad bandage

Treating Mild Cat Burns

  • Clip fur around, and covering, the burn with scissors. Don't cut too close to your cat's skin.

  • Wash the burned area with cool water and a mild soap.

  • Apply aloe vera to your cat's burn three to five times a day.

Treating More Severe Burns

  • Clip fur around, and covering, the burn with scissors. Don't cut too close to your cat's skin.

  • Wash the burned area with cool water and mild soap.

  • Soak a sterile gauze pad in sterile water or saline solution.

  • Apply pad to burn and wrap with rolled gauze. Do this four to five times a day for the first three days. After that, you can switch to dry telfa pad bandages.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your cat has severe burns, you can rub Karo syrup or honey on its gums to keep the animal from passing out on the way to the vet.
  • Do not use cotton balls or cotton wipes. Fibers may stick to the burn.
