How to Prepare Aloe Plants for Winter

Aloe plants have amazing healing qualities. They help heal cuts, scrapes and infections as well as being the go-to treatment for sunburns. It is a succulent plant, 95% of the plant being water; because of that, it can freeze easily.       To ensure that the aloe vera plant survives the winter months, the plant must be potted and brought indoors (unless there is a heated greenhouse where the plant can live). Start by using the spade to dig a trench around the base of the plant as close to the plant without scraping it with the spade.

      Grab the plant firmly at the area just below the leaves and pull up, releasing it from the soil with the roots intact.

      Pour some of the potting mix and cacti mix into the terracotta pot, and mix together. Add enough mix to fill a little more than half of the pot.

      Add 2 cups of sand and 2 cups of gravel to the mixture (use 1 cup of each if the pot and plant are small). Aloe needs soil that will drain well, so pumice and/or perlite can also be added.

      Place the plant into the soil and add the rest of the mix to the pot. The plant is now ready for the indoors.
