Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the size and design of your trellis. Sketch your trellis out and make a note of the approximate dimensions. Trellises can be arched, square, or rectangular. Use your imagination.

    • 2

Put on your gloves and with your pruners and saw cut your wood and gather it up. You will need both vertical pieces and horizontal support pieces. Your wood should be of somewhat uniform thickness, but variations are fine, and will add to the rustic look of your trellis.

    • 3

On a flat surface, lay your wood pieces out in the design of your trellis. Before you begin screwing the pieces together, pre-drill pilot holes so that your wood pieces don't split as they dry and shrink a little. Begin building from the base of your trellis up and continue until the trellis is assembled.

    • 4

If you wish, take the twine and wrap the junctions of the wood pieces to cover the screws and to give your homemade wood trellis a more authentic rustic appearance.

    • 5

Place your trellis firmly in the ground and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the wood you cut and gather within 24 hours and do not leave it outside once you've cut it. If you cannot use it within 24 hours, store it in a cool, dry environment.

  • If some of your wood pieces will be slightly bent on the trellis, have someone hold the pieces in place as you screw them together.

  • If you can't find enough wood on your own property, ask neighbors for their permission before you remove wood from their property. You can also ask local tree-trimming services if you can remove some pieces of wood that they have cut down.
