How to Make 54-inch Table Runners
Make a beautiful table runners that are 54 inches long to enhance any table setting. Sew runners with decorative themes for weddings, holidays, birthdays and special events. Runners are about 12 inches wide and are laid down the center of a long table on which centerpieces are placed such as candles or bowels of fruit or flowers. The ends can be straight across or shaped with a point, with or without tassels attached to add an elegant touch.

Measure each fabric piece (main fabric and liner fabric) using a measuring tape to 56 inches long. Mark with a marker. The width of the runner is a personal decision, such as 12 inches. Whatever the desired width, add 1 inch.

Align the two fabric pieces together, right side in. Use straight pins to hold the pieces together.

Straight stitch on the sewing machine 1/2 inch from the edges of all four sides, except for the last 5 inches.

Turn the runner right side out, using the closed point of scissors to make sharp corners. Iron with a hot iron to give the runner a neat crease. Be sure to iron the 5-inch opening closed, aligned with the seam.

Straight stitch on top of the runner 1/2 inch from the edge all around on four sides to give the runner a nice finish. Iron again.

Tips & Warnings
To have pointed ends on the table runner, fold the two fabric pieces lengthwise, pinning the pieces. Use a straight edge to mark a right angle, then cut with scissors. Proceed the same way with the other end of the runner. Continue with instructions in Step 3.
To add a tassel at each end of the pointed table runner, lay the top of the tassel cord at the point before straight stitching so that it is inside while the fabric is right side in. When turning the runner right side out after stitching, pull the tassel out.
A layer of polyester (that comes in rolls) can be laid between the fabric pieces to add thickness to the runner if desired. With a sewing machine, straight stitch on widely spaced diagonals on the runner to give it a quilted finish.
