How to Add a Heater to a Pool

Swimming pool water heaters give you maximum time in your swimming pool, by heating the water and reducing the risk of getting cold. The water heater is installed outside the pool between the pool filter and pool. The pool pump cycles the water through the pool filter, into the water heater, the heater warms the water, then cycles it back into the pool. Adding a pool heater to your swimming pool only takes a few steps.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Pool heater
• Leveling tool
• Cylinder blocks
• PVC piping
• Small saw or sharp knife
• PVC compound

1. Test the water with a pH test kit. The water needs to be balanced before you begin installation of the pool heater. Add the necessary chemicals to balance the water.

2. Turn the pool pump off. Clean the pool filter and skimmer to be sure all debris has been removed, to avoid getting clogged in the new pool heater.

3. Locate a spot for the pool heater. You're going to want to place the heater on level ground about 2 or 3 feet from the pool filter. Use a leveling tool and cylinder blocks to be sure the area is level.

4. Attach a PVC pipe from the pool filter return valve to the inlet valve on the pool heater. Cut the PVC pipe to fit the area with a sharp knife or small saw.

5. Use another piece of PVC pipe to attach the outlet valve on the pool heater to the return valve on the side of the pool.

6. Turn the pool filter back on and wait for the water to cycle through. Check for any leaks on the newly installed PVC pipe. If there are any leaks, turn the pool pump off and secure the leaky areas with PVC compound to avoid future leaks.

7. Set the thermostat on the pool heater to your desired temperature.
