Removing screens and replacing them with storm windows is a yearly routine for many homeowners--putting in screens for summer and storm windows for the colder winter months. Removing the screens of double-hung replacement windows presents challenges; the process is different from standard single-screen windows.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open both sashes of the window, tilting them inward, in order to gain access to the screen behind them.

  2. Step 2

Focus on the top screen first, where the restraining side rims are smaller and allow screen removal. Push the bottom of the screen to the left in order to compress the clip in the screen that holds it in place.

  3. Step 3

Push the screen left until (as the clip on the left compresses) the right edge comes clear of the rim that holds it in place. Push this right edge outward until it is outside the outer rim.

  4. Step 4

Pull the entire screen to the right outside of the window to remove the left edge of the window from its slot. The entire top screen is now free.

  5. Step 5

Slide the bottom screen upward within the screen track until the bottom edge has been removed completely from the restraining rim along the bottom of the window frame.

  6. Step 6

Push the top edge of the screen left to compress the clip in the left side. This step is just like the top screen except the clip is at the top of the bottom screen (instead of the bottom of the top screen).

  7. Step 7

Push the right edge outward when it is clear of the restraining rim and then pull the entire screen right to remove it from the left rim.
