How to Store Baby Clothes

With the rapid growth of a new baby, clothes are often outgrown before they were ever worn. If you want to store the clothing in anticipation of another baby, an organizational system is key. A reliable system takes very little time and will save you hours of sorting when you once again need a newborn sleeper. Even if you do not use the clothing for another child, organized baby clothes will be easier to sell.

Instructions

    • 1

Designate a place, like an extra drawer or a storage bin, to place clothing when it no longer fits your baby.

    • 2

When your designated spot is full, or when baby transitions to a new size, neatly fold all of the clothing.

    • 3

Sort the clothing into categories. Separate sleepers, shirts, pants, day outfits and dress outfits. Make separate stacks for various sizes and for boy, girl or gender neutral clothing.

    • 4

Place each stack of clothing into a plastic bag. Remove excess air.

    • 5

Label the bag with a permanent marker. Include the size, the type of items enclosed and if the clothing is gender neutral or for boys or girls.

    • 6

Place the individual bags into a large plastic bin for storage. Label the bin with what size clothing it contains.

Tips & Warnings

  • For extra special clothing, like the outfit your baby wore when he came home from the hospital or in pictures, consider safe, long term storage. The Minnesota Historical Society recommends using acid free tissue paper and acid free boxes to store textiles for preservation.

  • For clothing you do not reuse, this storage system is handy for selling clothing in lots. You already completed the organizing!
