How to Install Baby Pool Fence with Pavers
A baby pool fence is a necessity when you have small children in your home or have small children that visit you often. Fences can be easily installed into pavers around the pool, and the fence can also be taken down when the pool is closed up for the winter.
Things You'll Need
- See-through mesh pool fence or gate
- Plastic or rust-proof metal inserts for pole installation
- Electric drill
- Electric screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Colored chalk
- Small package of quick dry cement
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure three feet back from the pool edge in several places around the pool and make a small mark on the pavers with the colored chalk.
-
2
Measure the entire perimeter of your pool to get an exact length around the pool area. Decide where you would like the gate to the pool to be located.
-
-
3
Contact a local distributor for pool fences in your area and give him the exact measurements for your perimeter. This distributor will then order the fencing for you. In addition, some pool supply companies may sell prefabricated fencing in specific-sized panels for your purchase.
-
4
Measure the distance between each of the gate section feet (typically about 36 inches apart). Lay out each section around the pool, marking with chalk where each foot hole should be placed.
-
5
At one chalk mark, drill a hole in the paver using your electric drill. The hole should be at least four inches deep and may very well go deeper than the paver itself.
-
6
Install the plastic or rust-proof metal inserts for each of the feet for the fence. Push them deep into the hole, using an electric screwdriver and screws to secure them into place. In addition, you may choose to use a small amount of cement in the hole to better secure the insert into place. The top of the insert will be flush with the paver.
-
7
Insert each of the gate feet into place by snapping them into the plastic or metal inserts. In addition, insert the gate into place using the same actions.
-
8
Connect each gate together along the sides, typically with a latch that is pre-installed along each side. Each latch will secure each gate into place.
-
9
Install the lock for the gate at the top of the gate area. This device may be a key-lock system or a simple latch-lock that can only be opened from the top.

Tips & Warnings
Typically, a baby gate will cost between $200 and $1,000, depending on the type of material, mesh being cheaper, metal more expensive.
The gate can be easily removed when the pool is not in use or you no longer need the gate. Snap each gate foot out of the holes by pressing downward, twisting counterclockwise and then pulling upward.
You should always get a pool fence that you are able to see through, because you need to have sight of the water in case a child does get past the fence.

I own a pool safety company and this article is very misleading. We have had very poor results with installing mesh fencing in pavers. Because the pavers are set in sand and not mortar, they "toggle" or move especially over time. definitely not enough structural support to hold poles rigid particularly at corners or on curves. Mesh will end up sagging and looking terrible. For this reason, today, I WILL NOT install in pavers unless they are set in cement where we intend to drill. Good luck...
