How to Remove a Pet Smell From a Yard

Once you've housebroken your pet, you may think your days of dealing with the odors are over. Unfortunately, even when pets relieve themselves outdoors in your yard, the fresh air may not be enough to completely get rid of the odors. Quick but diligent cleaning will help get rid of those odors instead of letting them continue to build up. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up any pet feces in your yard with a plastic bag and dispose of it in an outdoor garbage can. Spray your grass thoroughly with cold water from an outdoor hose or bucket. Rinse off any concrete surfaces, flower beds or fences that your pet may have urinated on.

    • 2

Pour four large 32 oz. bottles of hydrogen peroxide into a large bucket. Add 1/3 cup baking soda and 1/2 tsp. liquid dishwashing soap and gently shake or rotate the bucket so all the ingredients are evenly combined.

    • 3

Apply the solution directly onto any areas of your yard that contain the pet odor. Make sure the areas are completely saturated with the solution.

    • 4

Let the solution soak into your yard for at least 24 hours. Do not rinse the area with water--the solution will evaporate on its own.

    • 5

Inspect your yard to determine if the smell is still present. Repeat the process every day for three to five days or until the odor is completely gone for strong pet smells.

    • 6

Rinse your yard daily with the hose or sprinklers after the treatment is over.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spray the area with water as soon as you notice your pet has relieved itself to keep the scent from sinking into your yard.

  • Ensure your pet drinks enough water because dehydration can make urine more concentrated and stronger smelling.

  • Be cautious if you decide to use a commercial pet odor repellent spray to get rid of smells in your yard--the scent may make your pet more likely to urinate even more in order to cover up the new scent.
