How to Change Washer Hoses

Washing machine hoses allow the water from your home to travel in one direction into the machine for cleaning of clothes and linen. In the course of time, hoses burdened by the continuous water pressure (caused by not turning off the water valves) become weak. Homes with well water produce rust and mineral deposits that build up in the hoses, causing the coupling to become rusted and possibly leak. Replacing your washing machine's hoses with new hoses every year (or when you buy a new washing machine) and turning the water off at the valve will help save you money and stretch your washing machine's lifetime. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the water supply at the valve for both hot and cold. Use channel locks to break loose the coupling of the hoses from the valve and then at the intake on the washing machine. Twist off the old hoses and discard them.

    • 2

Insert new gaskets in the coupling of the new water hoses. Use Teflon tape and wrap the threads of the water valves and the intake valves of the washing machine. Attach one end of each hose to the hot and cold water valves and hand-tighten.

    • 3

Attach the other end of the hoses to the water intakes on the washing machine. Connect the hot water hose to the hot intake and the cold water hose to the cold intake. Hand-tighten the couplings.

    • 4

Use the channel locks to give each coupling a few tightening turns.

    • 5

Turn on the water valves and make sure there are no leaks at each coupling.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not "overtighten" the couplings on the washing machine water intake valves. This may cause damage either by cracking the housing or when removing the hose at a later date.
