Instructions

  1. How to Set Wooden Fence Posts With Quikrete

    • 1

Dig the first posthole with your auger or clamshell digger. The posthole should be at least 25 percent of the total overall length of your post. For example, if you are building a 6 ft. fence you will want to have at least 18 inches below ground. With a 4 inch stone base (for drainage) you need to dig a 22 inch vertical posthole.

    • 2

Add 4 inches of stone to your hole to create the base for your post and Quikrete.

    • 3

Place and level your post in the hole. After placing a level on each side of your post and checking that the post is at a 90 degree angle place 2X4s against it to support it or have a helper hold it in place.

    • 4

In a wheelbarrow, mix enough fast setting Quikrete (according to the package directions) to make a concrete collar around your post.

    • 5

Slowly shovel the Quikrete around the post to fill it, and then level off the surface.

    • 6

Before the Quikrete sets check that your post is level and plum. Make any needed adjustments and secure the post again until it has set.

    • 7

Following your fence layout and plan, dig the other postholes, place the posts, string the string, level and plum and secure each with additional fast setting Quikrete.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pressure-treated or sealed wood is best for fence posts.

  • Plot the position of your posts to support your fence carefully.

  • Measure and level twice or three times.
