How to Cure Cheilitis

Cheilitis is a skin condition that affects the lips with inflammation. A common form is angular cheilitis, which causes the corners of the mouth to become cracked and painful. This condition has several possible causes: vitamin B12 deficiency; megaloblastic anemia, which can be caused by B12 deficiency as well; iron deficiency; and oral candidiasis, also known as oral yeast infection.

Instructions

    • 1

Add food to your diet that contains vitamin B12 and iron. Many foods contain both, which is convenient if you are unsure where your deficiency lies. Try liver, clams, beef, fish like salmon and tuna, cheese, milk, eggs and chicken.

See your doctor for prescription medications. He may prescribe an oral pill, an antifungal mouthwash or some kind of lozenge.

    • 3

Nurse your condition with home remedies. If your cheilitis is the result of a yeast infection, eating yogurt has been known to reduce inflammation. You may also rinse your mouth with a mix of hydrogen peroxide and water, but make sure not to swallow.
