Go to the UPS website. Find a link in the References section. At the bottom of the home page click on U.S. Home, then on the Careers link at the bottom of the page. You will need to start off as a part-time package handler first. Apply online for one of these positions.

After applying it may take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months (depending on their needs) to get an interview. When you finally do get the interview, be positive, have a clean appearance and a can-do attitude. Let the interviewer know that you want to work your way up to a driving position.

When you get the part-time package handler job, do it to the best of your ability. Once you have 30 days in with the company tell your supervisor you'd like to put your letter in for full-time driving. You'll have to write a simple letter stating your intent to become a full-time driver. You'll be put on list behind other part-timers.

While you're waiting to be called for full-time driving (this can take anywhere from six months to three years) tell your supervisor you want to sign up for "utility driver." This is a part-time driving position that allows you to get great driving experience on an as-needed basis in addition to your package handler position. Also if you have Saturday mornings free, sign up to be a "Saturday air driver." Again, it lets you get great driving experience working half days on Saturdays.

When you finally get notified that your full-time driving training is going to be scheduled, you're almost there. Show up on time every day for your training, ask questions, be alert and when you go out with a full-time driver supervisor, listen to his instructions and concentrate. If you've been doing utility driving or Saturday driving you should pass with flying colors.

Tips & Warnings
Part-time positions have great medical and dental benefits.e
If you need more money than a part-time package handler pays, but want to keep the benefits, you should look into working an additional part-time job until a full-time driving position opens up for you.
As a part-time package handler you may work at odd hours. Maintain a good sleeping schedule. You'll be working around fast moving conveyor belts and you need to stay alert.
Keep a positive attitude and do good work while you're part-time. Full-time driver supervisors know who the good part-time employees are and they'll bend over backwards to make sure you do well when you get your full-time driving test.
