Every Halloween party has candy, costumes, and carved pumpkins. But to spruce up a party, add some events. And to make them Halloween-related, carve them from pumpkins. Here's one idea for a pumpkin-based ring toss.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Large pumpkin
  • 3 Mini pumpkins
  • Knife for pumpkin carving
  • Participants
  1. Step 1

Hollow out a large pumpkin. Do this by carefully cutting to remove the top third of the pumpkin (the third closest to the stem). Scoop out the seeds inside.

  2. Step 2

Make rings. Turn the pumpkin on its side. Stabilizing the base with your left hand (if you're right handed), very carefully insert the knife about an inch from where you first cut. Cut all the way around the circumference of the pumpkin to generate your first ring. Repeat twice to make two more rings. Discard the base of the pumpkin.

  3. Step 3

Make "pegs" for the ring toss. There are many options here. One idea is to simply use wooden or plastic pegs. Another more festive idea is to use mini pumpkins (the ones that are about baseball size). You can simply place them on the ground and have people toss the rings at them. This may not be the best option because the rings, which are sturdier than you might expect, are far from indestructible.

An alternative idea that requires a bit more involvement is to float the mini pumpkins in a small inflatable pool (or any wide shallow tub). Everything floats and it's slightly easier on the rings. Splashing water also makes it feel like more of a party.

  4. Step 4

Finally, put some tape on the floor to mark where participants should toss from and have fun.

Tips & Warnings
  • The rings may break, so having a few backups is a good idea.
  • As with all pumpkin carving, be extremely careful with the knife. It may be wise to purchase a safe carving set before you begin.
