Step 1
At the beginning of trying to teach your puppy his name, you may want to start by taking him to the park, put him on a leash about 10 feet long which gives him no more than 5 feet to wander away.
-
Step 2
Now that you have him on a leash walk him around the park and when he is not looking at you, call his name with an excited voice. If he does not come to you bring him in by his leash. When he finally gets to you, show him a lot of excitement and joy.
-
Step 3
Keep repeating this exercise over until your puppy responds to his name, you can also try giving him a treat every time he responds to his name (that usually gives him more incentive).
-
Step 4
When your puppy is at home make sure that all the family members are calling him the name that you chose, try not calling him boy or girl (that may confuse him and make it harder for him to learn his name).
-
Step 5
Never include your dog’s name with anything negative. Also do not scold him if it takes him too long to respond to his name, and do not include the (stay) command with his name, try just using the (come) command with his name which will make him feel less threatened. Just remember when trying to teach your puppy his name, to always keep it positive.
