Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Write down keywords for your website or blog topic. If you're making a website for a website design company, you would select keywords like "website design" and "creating websites."

  2. Step 2

Enter those keywords into a keyword tool, like the free Google AdWords Keyword Tool to generate related keywords. You'll want to write down keywords with a high keyword search volume (i.e. 10,000 searches per month or more).

  3. Step 3

Brainstorm some good domain names using the best keywords, as determined in step 2. A good domain name allows you to ascertain the nature of the website/blog. A good domain name is also memorable.

  4. Step 4

Check to see if anyone owns the domain names using a domain purchasing website like GoDaddy.com or BuyDomains.com. You can enter the possible domain name into a search bar; it will tell you whether a domain is available for purchase.

  5. Step 5

Cross off all unavailable domain names and revisit the keyword tool to check the keyword search volume for the remaining possible domain names for your website or blog.

  6. Step 6

Pick the domain name with the highest search volume for the keywords and with the best "memorability" factor.

  7. Step 7

Buy the domain name on a domain name website like BuyDomains.com or GoDaddy.com by entering the domain name into the search bar and following the prompts to purchase the domain name.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never use one-word keywords. The best keywords are phrases. "Buying domain names" is a good keyword, as it has context. "Buying," or "domain," and "names" are not good keywords, as they lack context.
  • Premium domain names are very expensive. Premium domain names are one-word keywords with extremely high search volume (in the millions per month) and they're usually very easy to remember.
  • Some domain name purchasing websites offer a buyer's agent service, enabling you to contact a domain name owner to make an offer to purchase the website domain.
