The internet is a very powerful tool that can greatly enhance a child's learning. However, a child freely searching the internet is a recipe for disaster. Many families want to control internet access so that their child does not accidentally end up on a pornographic page or encountering otherwise adult material. Here are some steps to take to control internet access in your home.

Place the family computer in the living room. Kids are less likely to wander to questionable sites when they know someone is watching their every move from the couch. This also helps parents control the amount of time that kids spend on the internet as opposed to setting up a computer in a teenager's room.

  2. Step 2

Set time limits for your children to control internet access. For example, they may only be allowed to surf the web for one hour per day after dinner. Setting time limits can also motivate your children to search for what they need to find for school rather than wander social networking sites before getting to work.

  3. Step 3

Use an internet browser that is specifically designed to only access kid friendly websites. They usually only search gaming, homework, or educational sites.

  4. Step 4

If you are using Google, customize the SafeSearch options. These are located in the Advanced Search options and can be set at various levels depending on how strictly you want the content to be filtered.
