Just because your dog has fur doesn’t mean he is safe from the cold, snow and sleet. Dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia just like people. Dogs should not be left outside in inclement weather without warm, dry protection, it is cruel. Take care of your dog, protect him from harsh weather conditions and keep him safe and healthy in the winter.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Give your dog shelter from the cold. The ideal place is in a warm, heated house. It is cruel to leave a dog outside in the cold for extended periods of time. At the very least your dog needs a dog house with warm, dry bedding.

  2. Step 2

Put a sweater on your short hair dog. Short hair dog breeds have less protection from the cold than longer, fuller, furrier breeds.

  3. Step 3

Give your dog extra food during the cold winter months. Dogs burn more calories in the winter from trying to stay warm.

  4. Step 4

Add vitamin B complex to your dog’s diet. Vitamin B complex will help to keep your dog’s skin from getting dry. The cold, dry winter air can dry out your dog’s skin causing itching and flaking. Talk to your veterinarian about proper dosage.

  5. Step 5

Check your dog’s feet for ice and snowballs, especially between their toes. Ice and snow will adhere to fur and can cause frostbite on their paws.
