Things You'll Need:
- Glass bottle or vase with narrow neck
- Reeds
- Essential oils
- Mineral oil
-
Step 1
Find a glass bottle or vase with a narrow neck. The smaller neck will keep the reeds from falling out and also force the oils to travel up the wick instead of evaporating. Do not use plastic or metal which can alter the fragrance in your reed diffuser.
-
Step 2
Purchase skewers from your local grocery or dollar store to use for the reeds. They should be at least a few inches longer then your container and no more then twice the length of your container. It the stems need to be clipped try wire cutters. Avoid bamboo because they do not dispense as well as reed.
-
Step 3
Choose a pleasing essential oil or other aromatic liquid you enjoy. To make your own fragrant oil take ¼ cup of mineral oil and start by adding 12 drops of your favorite essential oil. If you want a stronger aroma add more essential oil. If you prefer, you can purchase reed diffuser oil.
-
Step 4
Fill the reed diffuser bottles at least half full to allow the oil to enter the ends and also penetrate the side of the reeds. Place the reeds into the bottle and flip them after the first hour so the other end can wick up the oil and spread fragrance quicker.
-
Step 5
Place your reed diffusers throughout the home. Avoid areas where there is little air flow such as corners and bookshelves. You will have a stronger aroma if they are placed where people pass by and stir the air. Keep away from heat sources such as a stove and fireplace.
-
Step 6
Flip the reeds occasionally in the bottle to refresh the scent.
