Things You'll Need:
- hooded sweatshirt
- fabric scraps
- needle and thread
-
Step 1
children's costumeHave your child help make a decision about what their costume will be. If your costume is for a club or community play, direction may be provided. If this is a Halloween costume, set a deadline the weekend before as children often change their mind. The photo shows this child's decision to be a hermit bog, a combination of a hermit crab, bird, and dog. The bird bill is a hat and a visor.
-
Step 2
children's costumePurchase a plain colored hooded sweatshirt. This may take some shopping around to find one without popular logos, but they can be found. Choose a larger size if this costume will be worn outdoors in cooler weather so you can layer warm clothes underneath.
-
Step 3
children's costumeGather the materials to decorate the costume. Fake fur, cloth, yarn, felt, and even chenille stems are easy to sew on.
-
Step 4
children's costumeCardboard can be used for wings, shells, or shields. The example is a hermit crab shell made by layering cardboard and extending the middle spiral. The cardboard was stitched across the top with strong thread.
-
Step 5
children's costumeCut out the materials, using the hoodie as a guide. Tails are best cut above the ankles for safety. The featured costume is a skunk.
-
Step 6
children's skunk costumeSew on the embellishments using a simple whipstitch (in-out on the edges). This will secure the details to the costume but allow for easy removal after the event. Have fun with your extra special creative costume!
