Most women know what colors in their wardrobe flatter their skin tones and hair color. Beyond that, there are other considerations you might want to consider to flatter your figure type. This article will start you on your way to choose a wardrobe that flatters your figure.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure you have a full size mirror that reflects your figure correctly. Choose one that can be attached to the back or front of a closet door or a freestanding if your space allows. Next, take time to assess your overall body shape or figure type. Of the four body types, does your figure fit the hourglass type, the top heavy type, the bottom heavy type or middle heavy type?

  2. Step 2

If you determine that your overall body type is an hourglass, your bust and hips are about the same width and your waist is narrow. This body type is flattered by wrap dresses, belts and fitted bodice jackets and tops. Choose pants that have a slight flair that will help balance your curves.

  3. Step 3

If you determine that your overall body type is top heavy, most of your weight is in the top half of your figure. In clothing choices stay away from scoop neck tops and horizontal stripes which tend to make your bust appear larger. Instead, use a V-neck top which elongates the chest. For clothing below the waist choose slacks with volume, such as wide leg slacks and a full skirt.

  4. Step 4

If you determine that your overall body type is bottom heavy, most of your weight is in the bottom half of your figure. In choosing clothing styles, stay away from tapered pant legs and/or light fabric that clings to the legs. Choose an A-line skirt or dress in dark colors. Above the waist choices should concentrate on ruffled or embellished shirts and tops.

  5. Step 5

If you determine that your overall body type is middle heavy, your waist is undefined. Choose a properly fitting bra which will naturally create a visual division or break between your bust and tummy. In choosing clothing styles, look for am empire waist dress and heavy material that will fall into an A-line appearance. Try concealing your tummy with a blazer or 3/4 length top or blouse.
