Whirlpool dryer owners should learn how to take apart their appliance. When the dryer cabinet is disassembled, parts can be accessed for quick replacement and testing. The cabinet is put together with a series of retaining clips and screws, and it takes only a few minutes to disassemble using a few basic hand tools. You will not have to remove any wiring when the cabinet is disassembled correctly.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Putty knife
Disconnect the Whirlpool dryer from the dryer wall outlet. Pull the Whirlpool dryer away from the wall 2 feet to allow room for the control console to sit back in a service position.
Locate the screws on each end of the front of the control console that secure it to the top panel. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove these screws. Grab the control console at each side and lift it until it sets back into the service position.
Use the screwdriver to remove the three screws at the back of the dryer top. Grab the dryer top and slide it toward you to release the front clips and the tabs in the rear. Lift the top panel off o the dryer and set it out of your way.
Use a putty knife to release the toe panel if your dryer is equipped with one. Insert the putty knife blade in between the top of the toe panel and the bottom of the front panel. Press in and release the retaining clips that hold the toe panel in place. Pull the toe panel away from the dryer and set it to the side.
Locate the two door springs where they connect at the base of the dryer. There is one spring on each side. Pull the springs down with your hands and unhook them from the base of the dryer. From the open top of the dryer, locate the door switch wiring harness. It will be inside the front right corner of the dryer. Disconnect the door switch wiring harness by pulling it apart with your fingers.
Remove the two screws that secure the front panel to the side panels using a Phillips head screwdriver. Swing the top of the front panel toward you and lift it straight up and away from the dryer.
Use the screwdriver to remove the four screws that secure the front drum baffle to the front of the side panels. The cabinet is disassembled and you have access to all the working parts within the Whirlpool dryer.
