How to Become a Security System Installer

The vast majority of security system employees fall into two major categories: salespeople and installers. After a salesperson has sold a system, an installer typically arrives (often within minutes) to install the system. If it's becoming a security system installer that you are interested in pursuing, you should be able to make it happen by following a few simple steps.

  1. How to Become a Security System Installer

    • 1

Contact a security systems company. A few of the major security systems companies include Pinnacle Security, Apex, Brinks and ADT. Ask the company for the contact information of the regional manager nearest you.

    • 2

Contact the regional manager. Express your interest in becoming an installer. Security systems companies generally rely heavily on door-to-door sales, and as such, are always recruiting salespeople--and installers, too. In order to do this, companies like this typically hold recruitment meetings for would-be salespeople and installers on a regular basis. Ask the regional manager about when and where the next recruitment meeting will take place.

    • 3

Attend the next recruitment meeting. You'll be presented with all of the benefits of working for the security systems company. In addition to being told how much money you can garner per installation--a figure which generally goes up the more installations you perform--you'll probably be offered the use of the company's leisure facilities, typically including a video game area, a gym, a pool or some other similar enticement. The purpose of the latter is to sell you on the idea of working for this particular company.

    • 4

Sign up. If the recruitment meeting ends and you still want to be an installer, sign up then and there. You'll then be given a time to return and begin your training with other in-training installers.

    • 5

Report for training. Training to be an installer generally requires several sessions, led by a qualified instructor and each lasting several hours. You'll be presented with mock-up versions of a client's home and a security system and be shown, step by step, how the installation process is performed. Depending on the company and the date on which that company would like you to begin working, training could take as little as a week to as much as a month. Once your training has been completed, you can join a regional team as a security systems installer.
