How to Replace a Pressure Relief Valve

A pressure relief valve releases pressure from a water tank to ensure that the tank does not explode. Once the pressure is stronger than pressure of the spring located in the valve, the pressure is released out a dip tube. Does this Spark an idea?

      Remove power to item you are placing the valve on. Unplug it or turn off the breaker if it is a household item.

      Release any water in a tank. Drain with a hose in home water heater tanks. Ensure that all liquids are below the level that the pressure relief valve is at.

      Remove tubing attached to the pressure relief valve. The tubes will either pull out, screw off, or must be cut off. Ensure that you do not saw into the tank.

      Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the new pressure relief valve. Remove the old pressure relief valve with a plumber's wrench. Unscrew it in a counterclockwise motion. Screw the new relief pressure valve into the opening. Tighten completely down with the plumber's wrench.

      Place plumber's putty on the tube inserted into the pressure relief valve. Insert it into the new pressure relief valve. Allow the putty to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.Use Teflon tape if the tube had threads on it. Wrap the Teflon tape around the threads twice, and screw the tube back into the pressure relief valve.

      Plug the tank back in, and turn it on.
