How to Remove Super Glue From Fabric

Super Glue is used as one of the strongest multipurpose adhesives. It can, however, create a mess that is often a challenge to clean up. Removing Super Glue isn't as simple as applying adhesive remover, especially when it has dried onto a surface like fabric. The glue sets into the fibers and hardens, making it even more difficult to remove. Fortunately, there's a household remedy that can make such a task entirely possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a small bottle of acetone from your local drugstore or market. Most common nail polish removers are made from pure acetone. Be sure to look for acetone-based removers.

    • 2

Ventilate your work space to prevent inhaling hazardous amounts of acetone. Open a window if you're working with the chemicals indoors.

    • 3

Put on a pair of latex gloves to protect your skin and apply a small amount of acetone directly onto the dried Super Glue in the fabric. Allow the acetone to dissolve the compound before removing it.

    • 4

Use a toothbrush to gently scrub the glue and add more acetone as necessary. Repeat this process with the underside of the fabric if it's threaded, in order to loosen the glue from the base.

    • 5

Pour more acetone onto the fabric and use a dull knife to lightly scrape the area if any stubborn glue remains. Dispose of the dried glue remainders and wash your fabrics for a thorough cleaning.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dab a small area of your fabric with acetone to make sure it doesn't bleach or ruin the color. You might need to determine whether you'd rather leave the Super Glue or have a tarnished area in its place.

  • Acetone is a harsh chemical but is, unfortunately, the only effective way of removing the glue.
