How to Clear Away a Constant Stuffy Nose

Almost anyone has experienced a stuffy nose. A stuffy nose is nasal congestion that occurs when blood vessels in the nose become inflamed and cause the tissues around the lining of the nose to become swollen. This can be very irritating and annoying. Since stuffy noses are common, especially during the winter, most people do not go see a doctor because it will normally go away on its own. However, a constant stuffy nose can harm hearing and sleep. So, there are some things people can do to clear their stuffy noses.

Try something spicy. Steam and spice from the food help increase your sense of smell and open up the membranes blocked in the nose. So, eating Mexican food or hot soup may do the trick.

    • 2

Go for a jog. Exercising helps stimulate breathing and blood circulation, so jogging or other exercise is important in unclogging the nasal membranes.

    • 3

Inhale steam. Commonly used, humidifiers are great sources to help stuffy noses because the steam clears nasal passages. Use the humidifier at least three times a day for at least 10 minutes each. If a humidifier is not available, take a hot shower or sit over a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes. Don't burn yourself.

Raise your head while you sleep. Using additional pillows will be helpful by raising your head so that you are not laying flat. During sleep, nasal fluid can build up and it will get congested if the nasal membranes are laying flat. By having your head raised with pillows, the nasal fluid is less likely to congest the nose since it can run down the nasal passage.

Use saline drops. You can purchase saline drops at a pharmacy. However, you can combine water and a pinch of salt and create a saline solution yourself. Place a few drops of the solution in the nose. Make sure you are holding your head back so that the solution can reach the nasal membranes.

Use a cold washcloth. By placing a cold washcloth on top of your nose while you lay down, it should unclog your nasal passages.

    • 7

Try over-the-counter medication. Nasal sprays are popular and provide immediate relief from stuffy noses.
