How to Fix Dripping Delta Faucets

Delta is a major manufacturer of high-end faucets and appliances for kitchens and bathrooms. Because faucets are constantly under pressure and heat, even when not in use, even to properly installed faucets can leak. The most-common causes of leaks in a Delta faucet are loose nuts or stripped threading with built-up calcium. If the leak is not obvious, you will need to disassemble the faucet to find it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water main before performing any repairs to your faucet. The water main for the room can typically be found under the cabinets and can be identified by one or two handles attached to copper piping or flexible metal tubes. Shut them off by turning the handles half-a-turn counterclockwise. (See warnings.)

    • 2

Wipe down the entire faucet using your dry rag. Make sure to identify the areas that are leaking.

    • 3

Attach your wrench to the mouth of the faucet. Turning it clockwise until it is at least hand-tight. If there is visible threading between the faucet and the spigot, remove the spigot with the wrench (counterclockwise) and use the wire brush to scrape the threading to remove any debris. Reattach the spigot (clockwise).

    • 4

Tighten the water handles of your faucet using your screwdriver. The screws are located on top of the handles and need to be turned clockwise to tighten them.

    • 5

Apply a thin layer of silicon sealant or plumber's putty around the base of the faucet. Squeeze it on slowly and wipe off extra sealant. Allow the sealant to dry for at least one hour before turning the water back on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Silicon sealant and plumber's putty can be very messy if improperly applied, especially if this is your first time using these materials. You can use cotton swabs to apply the sealant to your faucet to prevent globbing. Always wipe down the excess sealant before the material begins to set, otherwise it will need to be scraped off. A faucet must be completely dry before using sealant, otherwise it will not attach properly.

  • Faucets are constantly under a significant amount of pressure from water that is often in excess of 100 degrees. Accessing plumbing while the water pressure is on can result in serious burns. Double-check that the water is in the "off" position before starting your project.
