How to Induce Labor Yourself Quick & Easy

Pregnancy can seem like an eternity and by the beginning of the 8th month, many women are ready to have their babies and be a mother. For this reason, many women begin trying natural induction methods beginning around the 36th week to 38th week of pregnancy. Some induction methods work faster than others, and all of them will work better in your 38th week than they will in your 36th week.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Start using evening primrose oil during your 36th week. This will ripen the cervix and help other natural induction methods move along quicker. Before you go to bed each night, place two capsules in the cervix or break them open and rub the oil on the perineum. You may move up to four capsules per day after a couple of weeks.

Stimulate your nipples to help your body release oxytocin. This is the same hormone that is in Pitocin, which is used in hospitals to induce labor. You can stimulate the nipples by gently rubbing them between your thumb and index finger. This is a quick way to induce labor if it is going to work. If it does not work within 20 minutes, stop and try again later.

Participate in intercourse with your spouse. Intercourse helps in two ways. First, like nipple stimulation, a woman's orgasm helps her body release oxytocin. Second, a man's semen contains prostaglandins, which help thin out the cervix.

    • 4

Walk your way to labor. This is one of the best ways for women to help bring on labor if their bodies are ready. Gravity helps pulls the baby down against the cervix, which can help it thin out and dilate. Some women also rock or swing their babies into position against the cervix.

    • 5

Drink castor oil. It is not the most pleasant way to induce labor, but it may work for you. Mix up to four oz. of castor oil with six oz. of orange juice and drink it quickly. This should make your intestines cramp up and your bowels empty within three hours. Since the intestines surround your uterus in late pregnancy, the cramping may cause it to cramp, too.

Tips & Warnings

  • These methods will not force your body to do anything that it is not ready to do.

  • Do not try any of these ideas prior to your 36th week of pregnancy.
