How to Put Up a Hillary Tent

Meant for budget-minded beginners, the popular Hillary tent balances a small price tag with somewhat larger quality concerns. Still, if you're not planning to scale Mount Everest, the tent (named for Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man who did) is likely more than adequate for recreational camping and is simple enough to put up.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a location for your shelter, someplace dry, level and large enough to accommodate the tent and provide "yard space" for relaxing outdoors. After clearing rocks, branches or other debris from the tent's floor area, spread out a ground cloth, your tent's "carpeting."

    • 2

Roll out the tent onto the ground cloth. Slide a stake into each loop at the corners and center of each side. Pound them into the ground.

    • 3

Put together the tent poles that support your shelter. Two longer poles slip through sleeves at the top of the tent, extending diagonally from the corners and crossing at the center. A shorter pole secures the rainfly.

    • 4

Slip the short pole into the rain flap and spread it out on top of the tent, using hooks at the corners of the flap to secure it and give your shelter a front door.
