How to Tow a Fifth Wheel Trailer

Towing a fifth-wheel trailer looks like it would be difficult as you have seen them struggling to back down a narrow area or maneuver through an express way with heavy traffic. The right trailer being navigated by the right truck, and you will forget you are even carrying a load behind you.The trailer is designed to follow your truck wherever you may turn or go.

Instructions

Perform a walk-around inspection. Check all your lights to ensure they are functioning correctly. Check the air pressure in your tires and make sure they match the recommended PSI suggested on the wall of the tire. Inspect the trailor for any debris or anything that could interfere with the operation of the trailor. Ensure the fifth-wheel is locked and all supports are elevated in the up position.

Adjust your mirrors where the trailer is in sight on both mirrors. You will have blind spots as in any large vehicle, but you can minimize that with a well adjusted mirror.

Drive the truck accordingly to the weight you are carrying behind you. Avoid oversteering and understeering. The trailer will respond to any sudden jerks you make with an unexpected turn or stop.

Avoid taking deep turns when prompted to turn. Make use of any room you have to make a wide clean entrance to the next road or property entrance. Do not attempt to make a tight sudden turn as this could cause the trailer to collide with oncoming traffic.

  • Use a spotter to help back up as this will make this task easier.

  • Always perform a walk-around inspection of the area you are backing into.

  • Always proceed with caution whether your backing up or driving forward as you are carrying more weight and your stopping will not be as sharp as without the trailer.
