Children enjoy craft activities that have practical uses. Decorating a clock together is a fun activity for kids because they can create a clock to match their bedroom décor, to give as a gift or simply to express their personality. As a bonus to parents, this project may encourage children to learn to tell analog time.
Things You'll Need
- Clock movement and hands
- Drill or punch
- Paint and other art supplies
- Number stickers (optional)
- Wooden or cardboard circle, or old clock
Use a thin wooden circle in the size desired as the base and face of your clock, or use a piece of sturdy cardboard. Remove any sharp or ragged edges with sandpaper or a craft knife. If you are renovating an old clock, you will need to cut a circle of stiff paper to cover the old clock face.
Punch or drill a hole through the middle of the circle to allow the clock hands to function. If using an old clock, remove the plastic covering over the clock face.
Decorate the circle or clock face as desired. Use paints, decoupage or other techniques and mediums. Cover with a finishing medium if desired. Allow to dry thoroughly.
Use the long hand of the clock movement as a guide to where the numbers should be located. With the end of the long hand in the center hole, mark or trace where the point of the hand will fall for the 12, 3, 6 and 9 of the clock face. Add numbers to your clock, using small stickers, letters or paint.
Following the manufacturer's directions, assemble the clock movement and hands. Hang on the wall and enjoy your new clock art.
