How to Encourage Big Kids to Wear Diapers
Commercials and parenting magazines commonly call kids who wear underwear instead of diapers "big kids." But big kids sometimes need to wear diapers, such as if they have medical issues, are traveling or are nighttime bed-wetters. Parents can encourage kids over 4 to wear diapers, without making them feel small.

1
Explain why. If you don't want your older child to feel upset about having to wear a diaper, treat her like a big kid by explaining why she needs to wear a diaper. List how it can help keep sheets dry and encourage rest, or how it will be better than having an accident while visiting Disney World.

2
Pick out diapers together. Let your child have a say in which diapers he wants to wear.
-
3
Give rewards. Create a sticker chart using markers and poster board and give her a sticker each time she puts on the diaper without a fuss. Give a small reward when he gets five or 10 stickers on the chart. Kids over 4 respond well to rewards and incentives.

Talk to the pediatrician. She may have suggestions on alternatives to diapers or other ways to help your child. Your child can also discuss his situation with the doctor; the advice of another trusted adult may help your child feel better.

Tips & Warnings
Be respectful. Wearing a diaper after the age of 3 can be embarrassing and awkward. Respect your child's feelings and refrain from making her feel worse about it.
Stay as relaxed as possible throughout the process. The more stressed out you get, the more difficult things will be for your child.
Keep the sticker chart private. Your big kid probably doesn't want everyone who visits your home to know that he needs to wear diapers. Keep the chart inside the bedroom closet door, and don't label it "Diaper Wearing Chart."
