The basic requirement for hanging any type of window treatment is the hardware, which in this case is the drapery or curtain rod. Measure the width and length of your window. This will help you determine the length of drapery rod to purchase.

Determine the placement of your drapery rod. For instance, if you wish to make your window appear larger, place the drapery rod high above the window. This may also be necessary if you do not wish your floor-length window coverings to puddle on the floor when hung.

Mount the brackets for the drapery rod. "Brackets are usually mounted on the wall just outside the window frame so the bottom of the rod is even with the top of the frame," says Linda Neubauer in "The Complete Photo Guide to Curtains and Draperies: Do-It-Yourself Window Treatments." You will need a screwdriver or drill to attach the brackets to the wall.

Hang the drapes or curtains on the rod. Some window treatments require that you place the rod on the brackets first before you hang the curtains. These include drapes with hooks and curtains with ties. You can slide all others onto the rod before you place it on the brackets.

Step back and examine your work. Ensure that the window treatment looks balanced over the window. Make adjustments as necessary.
