Many people don't keep up routine maintenance of their pruning shears, even though it is very important. Keeping your pruning shears cleaned and sharpened helps you when it comes to cutting and trimming in your yard. It is not too late if you have forgotten to maintain your pruning shears. With just a few steps, you can have them back in great working condition.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Put some water in a bucket. You can add soap if you want, although it is not necessary.

  2. Step 2

Dip the pruning shears in the water and scrub with the wire brush. Make sure all sap and any trimmings are removed. Dry off the pruning shears.

  3. Step 3

Use the sharpening file along the edge of one blade of the pruning shears. Place the file flat against the beveled edge of the blade, near the bottom of the blade. Push the file away from you. Use short, firm strokes until you have reached the desired sharpness. Test the pruning shears on a nearby plant to check the sharpness.

  4. Step 4

Mix a bleach and water solution in a bucket. Measure out one part bleach to 10 parts water.

  5. Step 5

Dip the pruning shears into the bleach solution to disinfect them. Do this each time you use the pruning shears to help prevent the transfer of any plant diseases.

  6. Step 6

Coat the pruning shears with some oil. This will help prevent rust. Wipe any excess oil off with a paper towel.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some people use a vise to hold the pruning shears while sharpening the blades.
  • You can also take the pruning shears apart for easier access.
  • Sharpening pruning shears too much can inhibit their cutting ability by leaving a gap between the blades.
