How to Estimate for Floor Linoleum Tiles

Thanks to the rise in home improvement and home decorating shows, do-it-yourself repairs and remodeling have become more popular than ever. Simple home improvement projects such as laying your own linoleum tile can save you money if you are willing to put in the sweat equity. Before you run down to the local big-box home improvement store to purchase materials, get an estimate for how many tiles you will need.

Instructions

1. Measure the length of the floor using a tape measure.

2. Measure the width of the floor.

3. Figure out the total area of the floor by multiplying the length measurement by the width measurement.

4. Determine if you will use 9-inch-square tiles or 12-inch-square tiles. If you use 12-inch-square tiles, the number of tiles you need is equal to the area of your floor in square feet.

5. Estimate the number of 9-inch tiles you need by dividing the area of your floor by 0.5625.

6. Add 5 to 10 percent to your tile quantity to allow for waste. If you plan to lay your tiles out in a diagonal pattern, or if your room has an island, a nook or a curved shape that will require you to cut more tile to make it fit, add 15 percent instead.
