      Measure the length of the floor using a tape measure.

      Measure the width of the floor.

      Figure out the total area of the floor by multiplying the length measurement by the width measurement.

      Determine if you will use 9-inch-square tiles or 12-inch-square tiles. If you use 12-inch-square tiles, the number of tiles you need is equal to the area of your floor in square feet.

      Estimate the number of 9-inch tiles you need by dividing the area of your floor by 0.5625.

      Add 5 to 10 percent to your tile quantity to allow for waste. If you plan to lay your tiles out in a diagonal pattern, or if your room has an island, a nook or a curved shape that will require you to cut more tile to make it fit, add 15 percent instead.
