Plan for two. Because pecan trees grow male and female flowers, which mature at different times of the year, they are divided into two types: Type I and Type II. With Type I trees, the male flowers give off pollen before the female flowers are ready to receive it. It is the opposite with Type II trees, where the female flowers are ready to receive the pollen before the male flowers can provide it. (More information in Resources). Each variety falls under one of these two types. Although some pecan trees are self-fertilizing, experts recommend having one of each type. This will result in cross-pollination among the trees, and you will be more likely to reap an abundant harvest.

Identify your climate zone. Once you know your climate zone, you can select pecan varieties that will do well in your area's weather conditions. BassPecan.com features a climate zone map, where you can click on your area for a list of pecan trees that will grow there.

Choose your variety. Again, you should choose at least one Type I and one Type II. Decide what is the most important factor. Do you want a tree that harvests in September, or October? What kind of nuts do you want to produce? Do you want to use them for desserts or to serve with olives and wine? Are you looking for a tree that is native to where you live? BassPecan.com provides descriptions of each tree and the nuts they yield.

Inspect for quality. Pecan trees are susceptible to a variety of diseases, many of which will be prevalent in your area. Work one-on-one with someone at the nursery to help you find the heartiest trees. Ask him or her to help you select the best soil and fertilizer for disease prevention.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you buy your trees online, look for retailers that offer warranties in case your trees arrive damaged.
