How to Care for Stella de Oro Day Lilies
Stella de Oro means "star of gold" and these showy daylilies live up to their name with massivef 2-inch yellow blooms. Rewarding the careful gardener by multiplying rapidly, Stella de Oro lilies are tremendously adaptable and almost pest-free flowers. Requiring little upkeep, hardy Stella de Oro lilies are good perennial foundation plants. Growing in areas where other plants fail, their rich golden blooms make a big impact in mass plantings. They are used as a ground cover because of their compact spread and non-invasive habit; Stella de Oro lilies withstand adverse conditions and continue to bloom. Each bloom lasts only a day but bloom is almost continuous through spring, summer and into early fall under ideal growing conditions. Does this Spark an idea?

Dividing Plants
-
1
Divide Stella de Oro daylilies more often than other lilies due to their uniquely fast growth habit. Decreased bloom, straggling leaves or bare centers are indicators that Stella De Oro has outgrown its spot and needs dividing.
-
2
Prepare lilies for transplant by watering well one day ahead. Prepare planting sites a day ahead by digging in compost and watering well. Stella de Oro lilies have a large root system, so new planting sites must be large enough to accept these roots.
-
-
3
Remove the Stella de Oro from the soil by working around it with a shovel or garden fork. Work under it all the way around at an angle then lift from underneath when roots are free. Put the lily on a flat surface and cut into quarters using a garden knife.
-
4
Put one Stella de Oro back in the original hole and plant remaining three lily quarters in new locations. Mulch the bases of the lilies and water well. Keep to a watering schedule for the next 4 to 5 weeks but don't over water.
Flower Maintenance
-
5
Deadhead by cutting off spent blooms daily. Remove stalks that have finished blooming by cutting them off at the bottom. Taking off the stalks while still green encourages Stella de Oro to form more flower stalks. Remove dead foliage by cutting in late fall when Stella de Oro has finished blooming.
-
6
Fertilize in extremely poor soil for better blooms with a good fish fertilizer or natural amendments like compost. Under normal conditions Stella De Oro does not require fertilization. Mulch the base of Stella de Oro for best results in very cold or very arid zones. Use soil amendments like compost in areas with clay soil to promote drainage.
-
7
Ensure that Stella de Oro gets at least 6 hours of full sun a day for the most flowers. Low light and little water produces leaves, not blooms.
-
8
Decorating the winter garden by letting some stalks form seed pods may decrease bloom. Seed pods can be as showy as the flowers when they burst, and attract winter birds.
