Things You'll Need:
- 2-by-4
- Sand
- Two levels
- Drill
- 1/2-inch drill bit
- Steel pole 1/2 inch in diameter by 2 feet long
- Rake
- Water drum roller
-
Step 1
Buy a 2-by-4 that is 2 feet longer than the diameter of the pool. For instance, if your pool diameter is 10 feet, you need a 2-by-4 that is 12 feet long. Measure in 6 feet from one end of the wood and make a mark. This will be dead center. Use a 1/2-inch drill bit to make a hole there.
-
Step 2
Start placing sand in the area you selected for the pool. If it looks like you'll have to use more than 2 inches of sand to make the area level, dig out some of the sod so that you need only an inch or two.
-
Step 3
Use a rake to even out the sand as much as possible, but do not pack it down.
-
Step 4
Find the dead center of the sand area. Pound the 2-foot steel pole into the ground about 1 foot to hold it there. Slide the 2-by-4 with the center hole down the pole. You should have 6 feet on each side of the pole.
-
Step 5
Set one level on each side of the pole, a foot from each end of the 2-by-4.
-
Step 6
Start moving the 2-x-4 around in circles, with one person on each side. Watch the level as the 2-by-4 smooths the sand to make sure that you are getting a level reading. Continue until you have a flat and level surface. Remove the pole and the 2-by-4 when you are done.
-
Step 7
Wet the sand and tamp it tight with a water drum roller, which you can rent at an equipment shop. The sand must be hard and compact before you erect the pool.
