How to Lift the Rear End of a Car

Jacking up a car is an easy procedure if the proper precautions and steps are followed. There are many procedures that require raising the rear end, including brake repair, axle removal and brake bleeding, so it is important to be familiar with this procedure.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Place your vehicle in park and set the emergency brake.

  2. Step 2

    Position the hydraulic jack under the rear jacking point. This will vary according to the year and model of the vehicle.

  3. Step 3

    Make sure the turn valve is closed on the jack and slowly raise the rear end off the ground.

  4. Step 4

    Continue jacking until the rear end is off the ground and the jack stands will fit under both axles.

  5. Step 5

    Slowly open the turn valve on the hydraulic jack and allow it to gently settle on the jack stands.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the hydraulic jack is full of fluid to prevent slipping when you are raising the vehicle.
  • Make sure your jack stands are in good condition without rust or cracks before using them.
  • Do not get under the vehicle without the jack stands supporting the vehicle.
