Plastic anchors are used when installing fixtures like shelves or lighting on drywall, masonry or plaster. Plastic anchors prevent walls from chipping, cracking and tearing while increasing the stability and strength of the mounting screws.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Purchase plastic anchors and corresponding screws. They are usually packaged together or are coded for size.

  2. Step 2

Drill a hole for the plastic anchor. The width of the drill bit should be slightly smaller than the width of the anchor.

  3. Step 3

Tap the plastic anchor, with the closed end facing away from you, into the hole with a hammer. Do not pound the anchor; it should sit slightly higher than the surface of the wall when you are finished.

  4. Step 4

Position the item to be mounted on the wall, then thread a screw through the mounting hole into the plastic anchor. Tighten the screw slowly until it is snug. Do not overtighten the screw; if you do, the plastic anchor will rotate in the hole and become unstable.
