How to Install Outlets in Log Walls

Electrical outlets can be installed in the walls of a log home, but only when the logs have been properly drilled and marked. You will need to drill holes for the electrical wiring in the logs as they are being set into place. This will allow you to drill a single hole in each log. Once the holes have been drilled, you will need to cut out a hole in the log for the electrical outlet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Mark on the first layer of logs where the outlet box is going to be located. Also mark the location of the holes on the subfloor so you will know where the hole is located.

    • 2

Drill a hole into the top of the log that goes through the subfloor. The hole will need to go through the subfloor so it can be sent to the electrical or junction box.

    • 3

Drill a hole in each subsequent log that is set in place until you reach the level where the outlet will be located.

    • 4

Notch out a hole for the outlet box.

    • 5

Place the electrical box on the log, where the drilled hole is located, and trace around it with a pencil to create an outline.

    • 6

Drill holes within the outline using a hole saw bit with a power drill. Clean out the holes using a hammer and chisel or a reciprocating saw.

    • 7

Run the electrical wiring through the log wall to the subfloor.

    • 8

Place the electrical wiring into the electrical box and then attach it to the log wall using screws and the power drill.

Tips & Warnings

  • A metal hanger or metal wire can be used to clean wood chips out of the hole for the electrical wiring.

  • If you do not mark the location of the drill holes on the floor or log properly, the hole may not be straight enough to allow the wire to reach the subfloor.
