There's something inherently romantic about candles flickering in glass jars. Hung from tree branches or planters, they add an undeniable charm to outdoor weddings. Even better, lanterns made from jars are an affordable, easy-to-do wedding project for DIY brides. Track down jars at flea markets and thrift shops or enlist your friends to save their empty spaghetti sauce and olive jars for your project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Glass jars
  • 22-gauge wire, about 2 feet per jar
  • Wire cutter
  • Pliers
  • Sand
  • Candles, the right size to fit into your jars
  1. Step 1

Cut two pieces of wire, about one foot long each.

  2. Step 2

Wrap the wire around the mouth of the jar, twisting the pieces together with pliers so that the wire forms a secure circle around the mouth of the jar, leaving one long piece of wire on each side of the jar.

  3. Step 3

Lift one long end of wire and make a loop at the end of it by twisting the wire to make a small circle. Repeat for the other side, making the loop at about the same height.

  4. Step 4

Fill the inside of the jar with sand so that the sand is about one inch deep. This will anchor the candle.

  5. Step 5

Center the candle in the jar, nestling the candle in the sand.

  6. Step 6

Use the twisted loops to hang the lantern.

  7. Step 7

Repeat for as many lanterns as you need.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't want to trim the wire around the loops, wrap it into decorative twists and spirals.
  • For a romantic look, twist artificial flowers or leaves with the wire as you work on the lantern.
  • Use jars in a variety of sizes for an eclectic, charming look. Opt for jars in a uniform size and shape for a more classic appearance.
  • Be sure the wire is securely twisted before hanging the lantern to prevent the glass jar from falling and breaking.
  • Never leave burning candles unattended.
