Certified medical coders are technicians that enter codes into database systems that describe medical conditions, procedures and test results. They generally work for hospitals, doctors' offices or insurance companies. But how does one become a certified medical coder?

How to become a Certified Medical Coder

  • Get training. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most certified medical coders have training from community or junior colleges in their local areas, which is the minimum requirement. However, some have more advanced degrees from four-year universities. Some schools to consider are Everest College and Virginia College, both of which have online degree programs. (See Resources for links.)

  • Get your certification. You must have a two-year college degree from an accredited school. You must then take the exam to become a registered information technician. In order to do this, you must register for this exam. You will be notified by mail the date and time of the exam. Application fee is $45, and the exam is $280. (See Resources.)

  • Apply for medical coder jobs. Hospitals, medical clinics, doctors' offices and insurance companies all hire certified medical coders. Most colleges also have career development centers. Start with the college or university where you complete your studies for help in beginning your job search.
