Things You'll Need:
- Scissors
- Utility or kitchen knife
- Plant preservative
- White flowers
- Baby's breath
- Water-absorbent floral foam
- Basket
- Sheet of plastic
- Floral wire
- Waterproof floral tape
-
Step 1
Choose shades of white for the flowers in your arrangement. White is designated for use in floral funeral arrangements. Bright colors should be avoided to create a solemn atmosphere.
-
Step 2
Select varieties of flowers that are common in floral funeral displays. Choose carnations, lilies or alstroemerias, for example.
-
Step 3
Line a basket with a sheet of plastic to prevent water from leaking through the weave.
-
Step 4
Cut a block of floral foam to fit the basket. Using a utility or sharp kitchen knife, shape the foam so there is 2 inches of foam above the rim of the basket.
-
Step 5
Place a stopper in your sink. Fill the sink with water and add floral preservative according to the manufacturer's specifications. Stir the water to dissolve the preservative.
-
Step 6
Set the block of foam in the sink. The foam will float. Allow the liquid to saturate the foam.
-
Step 7
Remove the foam from the sink and place it inside the plastic-lined basket. Secure the foam to the plastic with waterproof floral tape.
-
Step 8
Use scissors to cut 1 inch from the bottom of the stem of each flower. This will allow flowers to absorb the water solution from the foam and extend the life of the flowers.
-
Step 9
Cut a strip of floral wire the length of the stem, from the base of the flower to the bottom of the stem. Twist the wire so it envelopes the entire length of the stem. The last 1/2 inch of the wire should be left vertical so that it can easily penetrate the foam.
-
Step 10
Insert the flower stem into the foam. Repeat for each flower in your arrangement. Add baby's breath to fill spaces between the flowers.
